Visakhapatnam: The delayed door-to-door garbage collection, particularly over the last five days to one week, has hit sanitation in the city.
Several residents complained that the sanitary staff had not been attending to lift the garbage after Dasara. In some areas, the dumper bins were overflowing and in some places there were no bins.
At a time when the city is battling with outbreak of dengue, city residents are left worried about the breeding of more mosquitoes due to heap of uncleared garbage rotting on the roads.
Mr K. Sudhir, a resident of MVP Colony Sector-X, complained that the sanitary staff has not been clearing the garbage from their household over the last one week.
“The sanitary conditions have deteriorated in our vicinity in the last few days. At a time when there is outbreak of dengue in the city, we cannot keep the rotting garbage back in our homes as it could breed more mosquito larvae. But we have no other option,” lamented Mr Sudhir.
Due to the delay in garbage collection in some areas and callous attitude of some people in dumping the garbage on roads, the streets of the Peda Waltair, Gnanapuram, Relliveedhi, Peda Jalaripeta, Maddilapalem, Scindia New Colony, Malkapuram, Dondaparthy and Old Gajuwaka are seen littered with garbage.
As per some statistics, Visakhapatnam city generates about 1,000 to 1,100 metric tonnes of waste a day, which is spread in about 533 sq km and consists of 72 wards.
