Mumbai: 2 dead in major fire at Cuffe Parade, 11 rescued

According to reports, the fire originated in the 20th floor of the building and a short circuit could have been the cause.

Mumbai: Two people were killed in a fire that broke out at the Maker Tower, a prominent high rise in south Mumbai on Tuesday.

Eight fire engines were rushed to the spot to douse the blaze. According to fire officials, 11 people have been rescued from the building in Cuffe Parade, which is a residential complex.

"The fire broke out at the 20th floor of residential Maker Chamber following which 10 fire tenders rushed to the spot," a senior official from the fire brigade said.

The incident took place in 'A' Wing of Maker Chamber at Cuff Parade at 6.37 am and, therefore, there were people sleeping in the tower at the time of incident, an official from fire brigade control room said.

The building suffered damages and a flat that was gutted in the fire belonged to Shekhar Bajaj, who is the MD of Bajaj Electricals.

The rescue work has been concluded and the fire has been brought under control.
