Kochi Corporation's ban on plastic bags not total
KOCHI: Though the City Corporation announced a ban on using plastic carry bags which were less than 50 microns- thick, it failed to enforce the restriction effectively. Though some of the big shopping malls and super markets have switched to paper carry bags, plastic bags are still being widely used in small shops and by wayside vendors. The City Corporation started enforcement of the ban from October 1 and special squads were formed in all the 21 health divisions to check the sale of banned bags.
As the public has to shell out nearly Rs 10 per bag, the demand for plastic carry bags has dropped drastically, confirm traders. Earlier, the average price for plastic bags was Rs 2 to Rs 3. “Though the ban is in force, it cannot be implemented in a short period and its use can be completely stopped in a phased manner. The special health squads deputed for the enforcement of the ban is engaged in awareness creation. They have been asked not to impose a fine during the first inspection,” said Adv. V.K Minimol, health committee chairperson.
Meanwhile, the civic body is planning to introduce holograms for plastic bags with thickness higher than 50 microns. The proposal will be discussed during the next council meeting. If it is introduced, the price of carry bags will go up further. The Corporation health authorities are expected to reduce the consumption of plastic carry bags within the city limits by 60 per cent through enforcement of the ban.
