CHENNAI: Armed with the coveted Institution of Eminence (IoE) status provided by the Central government, the VIT has ambitious plans to start innovative programmes at UG and PG levels in collaboration with Indian industries and reputed foreign universities.

Also, among the slew of initiatives contemplated by the Varsity, which attracts international students too, is to establish a technology park, higher education facilitators training institute and on-line learning centre with unique selling propositions (USP).

“The VIT has many firsts to its credit. We were the first in India to get British accreditation and American accreditation… we have been moulding our students to enable them carve out a career for themselves globally besides make them employable in the country,” VIT Chancellor G. Viswanathan said on Tuesday. Maintaining that his varsity wanted all its students to get gainful employment, Dr. Viswanathan said the VIT has not been affected by issues of enrollment nor its students faced unemployment problems.

The VIT has been fostering research and offered a hefty stiphend of Rs. 45,000 to Rs. 50,000 per month to researchers. The varsity even offered post-doctoral research programes, Dr. Viswanathan told reporters while sharing the future plans of his VIT. Admitting that VIT has been meeting the entire expenditure for research activities, he said this is an area where the government could play a crucial role, especially in extending grants. “We need lot of funds for research. I hope in future, the government would allocate appropriate funds,” he added.

The VIT will focus on niche areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Cyber Physical System, Autonomous Mobility, Wearable Technology, Smart Structure, Fin Tech and Sustainable Cyber Safety and Security among others. “Multi-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary approach will be followed in all the academics and research activities and the presence of foreign students and faculty members would be increased considerably,” he said.
