Kochi: Hibi Eden, MP, has asked the city corporation to take immediate measures to make RO-RO boat service in Fort Kochi - Vypeen route fully functional.
In a letter to mayor Soumini Jain and deputy mayor T. J. Vinod, Mr Eden said if the Kerala State Inland Navigation Corporation (KSINC), the government agency which is operating the boats, is unable to run more services, the civic body should consider entrusting the service with private individuals or agencies in strict compliance with the rules and guidelines.
He urged the corporation to discuss and take a final decision on the proposal without delay so that the travel woes of west Kochi residents are eased.
Though there are two Ro- Ro vessels operating in the stretch, only one of them is assigned for full time service, from 6.30 am to 9 pm. The other vessel starts service from 3 pm onwards.
Passengers, including women, children and elderly, had to wait for long time in jetties. Ro-Ro service covers Fort Kochi and Vypeen in 15 to 20 minutes, and hence the easiest, he said.
