PWD: River sand will be imported from month end
Chennai: Public works department (sand mining wing) has assured of importing river sand from abroad by the end of this month. Officials said that sand would reach Chennai port in the first phase. Sources said that considering sand scarcity, the government earlier this year announced that river sand would be imported from abroad to balance the demand and supply. Subsequently, Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) faced some hurdles, as it struggled to find out a suitable bidder.
Meanwhile, builders have welcomed the move. "Even though the officials concerned have delayed the process, steps should be underway not to make any further delay," said S. Ramaprabhu, vice-chairman, Southern Builders Association of India. At a time when there is a growing demand for M-sand, importing river sand would be a shot in the arm for both builders and public, he added.
A special appointed officer (sand mining wing) confirmed the import of sand. "All procedures regarding importing of river sand from abroad have been followed. We are gearing up to receive sand by the end of September and Chennai port will be first, where sand will be imported," the official said, adding that there is a high possibility that cost of river sand would take a dip after import.
PWD is poised to set up a quality checking team, the official noted. It may be noted that the government had decided to import 30 lakh of tonne of sand in the next two years. Similarly, ports like Ennore, Kattupalli and Thoothukudi have been identified for receiving sand from abroad.
