Protests continue in Mandya, KRS level dips close to dead storage
MYSURU: Farmers and various organizations protesting against the release of water of the Cauvery to Tamil Nadu showed no signs of calling off their agitation even as water dipped close to the dead storage level at KRS dam on Saturday.
Protests were witnessed in Mysuru and Mandya districts as 11,937 cusecs of water flowed into the neighbouring state. With today’s release, the water level at KRS dropped to 85.15 feet, a mere 11 feet from the dead storage level.
About 5000 cusecs was released from Harangi and Hemavathi to KRS in order to ensure flow of water to Tamil Nadu as per the order of the Supreme Court.
In Mandya, members of Cauvery Hitharakshana Vedike led by Mr G Madegowda continued their protests, while in Mysuru, sexual minorities under the aegis of Ashodaya, a NGO, staged a protest.
In addition, members of Cauvery Kriya Samithi and Sugarcane Growers Association staged protests in Mysuru. Several farmers tried to lay siege to the Command Area Development Authroity (CADA) office along with their buffaloes, but were stopped by the local police. Security measures have been beefed up near CADA office in the aftermath of today’s unsuccessful attempt by farmers to lay siege to the building.
