Bengaluru: Fire in godown; 1 killed, 4 injured
Bengaluru: A fire broke out in a three-storeyed furniture and bedding godown early Saturday killing a worker and injuring four others in D.J. Halli Police Station limits. Short circuit is said to be the cause of fire.
The deceased has been identified as Murad (23), hailing from Uttar Pradesh. Preliminary reports say that he died of asphyxiation.
The other four workers, Gulmar (24), Nazeer (25), Muneer and Mulrap (25), were admitted to Dr Ambedkar Medical College Hospital and are out of danger.
The godown belongs to Mansoor Khan and is located near Govardhan Garden in D.J. Halli 6th Cross. Chairs, cots, beds and other furniture were stored in the godown.
Mansoor and employed 10 workers from Uttar Pradesh and they were also staying there. Five of them were away when the fire broke out.
Murad and others were sleeping in the godown after work. The fire started around 3 am it soon engulfed the godown.
The smoke woke them up but the workers found themselves trapped inside. Out of panic, Murad and Gulmar locked themselves inside the toilet in the godown.
Seeing fire and thick smoke emanating from the building, the neighbours alerted the fire brigade. The fire fighters rushed to the spot with two fire tending vehicles and rescued Muneer and Mulrap.
The fire fighters broke open the toilet door and rushed Murad and Gulmar to Ambedkar Hospital. Murad failed to respond to treatment and died, while Gulmar's condition is improving and is out of danger, doctors said.
The D.J. Halli Police who assisted in the rescue operation, have arrested godown owner Mansoor Khan and are investigating, said Rahul Kumar Shahpurwada, Deputy Commissioner of Police.
