Additional seats for Neet candidates?
Chennai: Following the Supreme Court’s order to consider the interests of both the state board students and Neet qualified candidates in MBBS admissions, the state government may consider creating additional seats for the candidates qualified in the common entrance exam.
The Tamil Nadu is expected to promulgate an ordinance exempting students from the purview of Neet for one year.
While hearing the plea from the Neet qualified candidates on Thursday, the apex court has ordered both the state government and the Medical Council of India to come out with a plan which can give a middle ground for both the state board students and Neet qualified students.
It also barred the state government from proceeding with the medical admissions until August 22.
Following the order, the senior officials from the health department said they have to sit with MCI and discuss the solutions.
“The state government in consultation with the MCI and the central government should create additional seats for the candidates who secured higher ranks in Neet exam,” said Dr G.R. Ravindranath, general secretary, Doctors’ Association for Social Equality.
“The solution to the problem lies in getting the permanent exemption from Neet. At the same time, the state government shall conduct a separate entrance test based on the state board syllabus. It will give multiple opportunities for the medical aspirants,” he said.
Educationist P.B. Prince Gajendrababu said, “The state government should follow the same formula what was followed last year. Neet should be followed for all India quota and the management quota seats in private medical colleges. For state government quota seats, plus two marks alone should be followed.”
He further said the central government is responsible for the present chaos in medical admission.
