Thiruvananthapuram: The newly-built high-tech classrooms at Cotton Hill Government School were opened for students here on Wednesday in the absence of education minister C. Raveendranath.
Education minister, who was to inaugurate the function, opted out at the last moment. The students waited for the minister for couple of hours and finally the honours were done by Mayor V.K. Prashanth and former health minister V.S. Sivakumar.
Mr Prashanth hoped the infrastructure facilities like high-tech classrooms will attract more parents to admit their children in government schools. "We will provide more funding for building more smart classes in the school," he said and asked the students to be vigilant while using cyber space.
The Mayor advised students to take up organic farming on the school premises to mark the Malayalam month Chingam. He honoured S. Sujana, principal headmistress of the school who donated Rs 3 lakh for building a smart class.
The other class room was built using PTA/ SMC/ MPTA funds. The government school has set an example by carrying out such developmental activities on the campus mobilising their own funds.
Speakers at the function said the contribution of principal headmistress for building the smart classroom was worth emulating.
Deputy Mayor Rakhi Ravikumar presided over the function. S. Unnikrishnan, K. Mohandas, Mohammed Haneesh, P. Girijabai, S. Sujana, Maya Reji, S. Sharmila Devi spoke at the function.
