Man who burnt self in train shifted to Kochi

Alappuzha: The man who was admitted to the Medical College Hospital here with burns after he tried to end life on board Netravathi Express on Tuesday, has been shifted to a private hospital in Ernakulam on Wednesday.

According to the RPF which launched a detailed investigation into the incident, Niwas, 25, Rajaganapathi Nagar, Opposite New Bus Stand, Mudiyattom, Vellore district of Tamil Nadu was shifted to the super speciality hospital since doctors found his condition unpredictable. He suffered 40-60 percent burns. It impact on the internal organs could be devastating. So he was shifted to hospital for better treatment.

Bency Joseph, RPF sub-inspector, said that he was still not in a condition to be interrogated. ‘No foul play is suspected. We got evidence that proves the fact that he did get into the train from Thiruvananthap-uram Railway Station. He poured only petrol on his body. No evidence of diesel in his possession was found. He kept the bottle full of petrol in the bag. That was why he got away from RPF surveillance’, SI said.

Meanwhile, Sreenivasan, his father a retired public servant who arrived here on Tuesday, said his son was mentally down for quite some time since his electric shop in Vellore was making heavy losses. He went missing from home four-day ago’, he said

The entire drama relating to the case was unfolded at Kayamkulam Railway Station at 11.45 am. It was the loco pilot who detected the cloud of smoke swirling out of the general coach behind the engine. He suddenly stopped the train, and later bogie was detached evacuating passengers safely.

According to the police, Nivas locked himself inside the toilet and tried to end life setting himself fire after pouring petrol. Scientific experts from the police have gathered evidence from the damaged bogie.
