Tamil Nadu to build 3 check dams up to Manakadavu
CHENNAI: The State government has proposed to build three check dams across Aliyar river upto Manakadavu and has sought Kerala’s consent to proceed with the projects, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami has said.
Assuring to take up the projects after obtaining Kerala’s consent, Mr. Palaniswami said the move would help to impound the excess rainwater flowing waste into the sea besides recharge the groundwater. “Action will be taken to construct the three check dams after convincing neighbouring Kerala,” Mr. Palaniswami told the Assembly on Wednesday.
The Chief Minister was responding to a special call attention motion moved by Deputy Speaker Pollachi V. Jayaraman who sought the government to take steps to build three check dams across the Aliyar river, one of the tributaries of Kannadipuzha river.
At Manakadavu weir, the water released from Aliyar to Kerala is measured. According to sources, the Chitturpuzha receives water through the Aliyar river from both the Palar and Aliyar dams.
As per the Parambikkulam-Aliyar (PAP) inter-State river water sharing agreement, consent of both the States is mandatory for any construction activity in the basin.
