Hyderabad: New Municipal Bill gets Cabinet nod

Entails integration of databases and penalty for officials.

Hyderabad: The Cabinet on Wednesday approved the new Municipal Bill and Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao will introduce the Bill in the Assembly on Thursday.

The Cabinet decided to hand over the increased pensions under the Asara scheme to the beneficiaries on July 20 after holding meetings in each Assembly constituency.

The Cabinet discussed the Bill in detail and the holding of municipal elections in the state.

Sources close to the government said that the Chief Minister explained the salient features of the new Bill which is supposed to provide transparent and corrupt-free local governance.

Mr Rao explained that the new Act would enable the integration of the databases of the Municipal Administration, Revenue and Panchayat Raj department, and that would enhance transparency.

He explained that officials are made more accountable under the Act with regard to discharging of duties in a time bound and transparent manner.

Mr Rao said that government officials who are derelict in their duties will be jailed if a departmental enquiry finds them guilty.
