Expect heavy rains, Met Dept issues orange alert over Kodagu

The water level at Kabini Dam stood at 2,268.95 feet as against its capacity of 2,284 feet, and its inflow was 1,627 cusecs and outflow 500 cusecs.

Mysuru: The Indian Meteorological Department has forecast active to vigorous monsoon with moderate to heavy, very heavy and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places over Kerala and adjoining ghat districts of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka from July 18 to 20.

The IMD has even issued an ‘orange alert’ predicting very heavy rainfall (115.6 mm to 204.4 mm) at isolated places along coastal Karnataka, including Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts, a few districts in south-interior Karnataka, including Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru and Shivamogga from July 19 to 21, and in Hassan district on July 20. It has predicted light to moderate rainfall over the entire state.

In Kodagu, where heavy rainfall last year triggered landslides and widespread havoc, the administration has taken all precautions to handle any emergency. It has released a bulletin with an ‘orange alert’ from July 19 to 21.Meanwhile, with good rains in the Cauvery catchment area, reservoirs in the basin are receiving good inflows with their levels rising. On Wednesday, the water level at KRS touched 90.90 feet as against its capacity of 124.80 feet and inflow was 2,578 cusecs and outflow 405 cusecs.

At the Hemavathi reservoir, the water level was 2,887.22 feet as against its capacity of 2,922 feet. Its inflow was 1,509 cusecs and outflow 200 cusecs. At the Harangi Dam the water level was 2,819.50 feet as against 2,859 feet. Inflows were 365 cusecs and outflow 50 cusecs.
