Hyderabad High Court asks for report on jail inmates

Mr K. Srikanth, counsel for the state, informed the court that the number of prisoners in the state jails was less than the sanctioned capacity.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court on Tuesday directed the Legal Services Authorities of AP and Telangana to study the conditions of the prisoners languishing in the jails of the two states and submit a report, including the number of prisoners lodged in each prison by July 31.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Thottathil Bhaskaran Nair Radhakrishnan and Justice Ramesh Ranga-nathan was dealing with a Supreme Court direction, asking the High Court to issue directions to the state governments to take overcrowding of prisons as it involves violation of human rights.

Stating that the 132 prisons across the country are overcrowded by 150 per cent of their capacities, the apex court had requested the High Court to take up the issue suo motu to ensure that both state governments take steps to recruit adequate staff in the prisons in order to maintain proper administration. Mr K. Srikanth, counsel for the state, informed the court that the number of prisoners in the state jails was less than the sanctioned capacity.
