Madras High Court nod for relocation of Sivaji Ganesan statue

Judge said pendency of the petition shall not stand in the way of the authorities removing the statue of Sivaji erected on the Kamarajar Salai.

Chennai: Madras high court has made it clear that the pendency of a petition to relocate the statue of South Indian thespian late Sivaji Ganesan from the middle of the road of Kamarajar Salai junction to end of the platform on the eastern side of the Kamarajar Salai, would not stand in the way of the authorities removing the statue and erecting the same at the campus of Manimandapam for Nadigar Thilagam Sivaji Ganesan at Chennai, which is ready for inauguration.

Justice M. Duraiswamy however granted four weeks’ time to the special government pleader to file counter affidavit in response to the petition filed by K.Chandrasekaran, President of Nadigarthilagam Sivaji Samooganala Peravai.
In his interim order, the judge said since the division bench of this court had clearly held that the statue has been erected on the middle of the road at Kamarajar Salai junction would affect the traffic flow and the view of the vehicles passing through Dr Radhakrishnan Salai, the government has rightly taken a decision to remove the statue.

Now, the petitioner has given representations dated September 28, 2016 and May 17, 2017 to relocate the statue at the end of the platform on the eastern side of the Kamarajar Salai where number of statues already been erected.

However, the special government pleader submitted that government cannot relocate the statue on the said place but has decided to erect the statue in the memorial building.

The judge said pendency of the petition shall not stand in the way of the authorities removing the statue of Sivaji Ganesan erected on the Kamarajar Salai and erecting the same at the campus of Manimandapam for Nadigar Thilagam Sivaji Ganesan at Chennai, which is ready for inauguration,” the judge added and posted after four weeks, further hearing of the case.
