Hyderabad High Court stays woman lecturer recruitment in government colleges

Maintaining that the law permits only 33 per cent reservation to women, Mr Ramesh urged the court to stay the recruitment process.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court on Monday stayed a written test scheduled on July 30 for recruitment of woman lecturers in government residential degree colleges in TS.

Justice M.S. Ramachandra Rao was dealing with a petition by one S. Venkata Narasimha Goud challenging the notification issued by the TS Public Service Commission in June 2017 to fill 546 lecturer posts in degree colleges with women.

B. Ramesh, counsel for the petitioner, contended that the notification under general recruitment, reserving 100 per cent posts for women, was in violation of Articles 14, 16 and 19 of the Constitution.

He said that the notification amounted to discrimination as many male candidates who are qualified to work as lecturers in government colleges are waiting for an opportunity.

Maintaining that the law permits only 33 per cent reservation to women, Mr Ramesh urged the court to stay the recruitment process.

While considering the argument, the judge granted interim stay by directing the TSPSC not to go ahead with the written test scheduled on July 30.

The judge issued notices to the TSPSC and the state government asking them to file counter affidavits within two weeks.
