Karnataka: Eve-teasers beware, there's a cops' team on the prowl
Shivamogga: The District Police has launched an all-women police patrolling system- 'Obavva Troupe' with the intention of dealing with eve-teasing incidents. The launch happend at the premises of the women police station here on July 15.
Superintendent of Police Ravi D Channannavar who launched the Obavva troupe said, "In order to tackle the growing menace of eve-teasers, we have put together an all-women police team called 'Obavva Force' to help women in distress. The squad comprises only women staff and officers. They patrol the streets in disguise to nab the culprits red-handed. Later, cases would be booked against them under Karnataka Police Act, 1963. If we find that they are habitual offenders we will file s rowdy sheeter case against them," he added.
Referring to the arrests in the last five days, he said the Obavva Troupe had nabbed 50 persons on charges of eve-teasing in various parts of the city. The parents of such persons were also informed on the activities of their sons. A 10-member team comprising police sub inspector Ms Anita Kumari and Ms Sharavathi would patrol the streets for 100 days, he added. He also stated that penalty notice would be issued to the offenders of traffic rules by post henceforth.
