TN assembly notifies Vikravandi seat vacant

The DMK is also keen to contest Nanguneri seat, but the Congress continues to be firm in its demand.

Chennai: After the demise of Radhamani, the DMK MLA representing Vikravandi constituency in Villupuram district, the Tamil Nadu Assembly secretariat on Monday notified the seat as having fallen vacant.

This takes the number of vacancies to be filled in the State Legislative Assembly to two, as recently the Nanguneri seat also fell vacant following the resignation of its MLA H Vasanth Kumar, who has been elected to the Lok Sabha in the recent elections from Kanniyakumari constituency.

In addition to these two Assembly seats, elections will also have to be held to the Vellore Lok Sabha constituency, polling for which was cancelled by the Election Commission in the wake of seizure of cash by Income Tax sleuths in that segment.

It is expected that the by-elections to the two vacant Assembly seats and for the Vellore Lok Sabha would be held within maximum six months, as required under the Law.

The DMK, whose numbers in the House has dropped to 100 after Radhamani’s demise, is gearing up to consolidate its position further in the Assembly, even as Congress, presently with seven MLAs’, is expecting to be given the Nanguneri seat in the by-poll too as the party had won that seat earlier. The DMK is also keen to contest Nanguneri seat, but the Congress continues to be firm in its demand.
