Metro in the works: Can’t park on MG Road
Bengaluru: As the Metro rail construction work is commencing in the central business district (CBD) area, there will be restriction on parking of vehicles on a few of the major roads.
The city traffic police are already implementing the parking ban on MG Road due to the commencement of the underground Metro rail line (Diary Circle to Nagawara). Soon, it will be enforced on Brigade Road, Church Street, Dickenson Road and other roads.
A senior traffic police officer said that they are observing the movement and number of vehicles during different times of both day and night. He said that based on it, they will chalk out a plan to ban parking of vehicles on these stretches until the Metro work is completed.
“For now, we are not allowing parking of vehicles on MG Road to study the traffic movement. If vehicles are allowed to be parked by the roadside, they eat up space while leaving little room for movement of other vehicles. If there is no parking by the roadside, vehicles will move about easily. We need to understand the ground reality and we are doing that now,” he added.
The officer said that complete ban on parking would be imposed after observation for a couple of days. "People will have to make arrangements to park their vehicles elsewhere after we start imposing the ban," he said.
Meanwhile, people who have their offices on MG Road and in the surrounding areas apart from shoppers had a difficult time finding parking space. They are now parking their vehicles on Rest House Road, Museum Road, Crescent Road and walking up to MG Road or Brigade Road.
Sushmitha Rao, whose office is on MG Road, said, “We were not aware of the parking ban and found tapes tied by the roadside of MG Road where we used to station our vehicles. The traffic cops directed us to park our bikes elsewhere, as parking is being not allowed due to Metro construction work. I had to park my scooter on Rest House Road and walk up all the way. Now, I will stop coming on my scooter to work, as I do not feel it safe to park it at a distance. The traffic police should have made alternate arrangements before implementing the parking ban.”
