The deceased have been identified as Prabhu Ram (26), Krishna Yadav (27) and Sumantkar (26). While Prabhu and Krishna were engineers, Sumantkar was a construction worker.
According to the police, about 25 construction workers along with engineers were present at the 30-acre plot in front of Lumbini Gardens where a new Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) is coming up. Around 11.30 am, the under-construction tank caved in on them, and they died on the spot.
The remaining workers were rescued by fire and emergency officials who immediately arrived at the spot. Among 14 injured, six are said to be critical.
Eight fire engines and one NDRF teams were pressed into service for the rescue operation. The injured workers were rushed to Columbia Asia Hospital and Chaitanya Hospital, police said.
According to the police, the incident occurred when the workers were constructing the ceiling of the water tank and the central portion of the ceiling collapsed on the workers. A pillar, which was constructed to support the inside part of the tank, had developed a crack, resulting in the collapse of centering.
The project was being carried out after BWSSB (Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board) had issued tenders to construct the STP.
