Jyothi Colony park turns dumping yard

The colony associations made several representations on the issue with the Cantonment Board but no action has been taken yet.

Hyderabad: A parcel of land once allotted for a park now resembles a garbage dump in Jyothi Colony in Ward 5 of the Secunderabad Cantonment.

Buildings have come on the rest of the land meant for the park over the last six to seven years.

The colony associations made several representations on the issue with the Cantonment Board but no action has been taken yet.

Mr S.R. Srinivasan of Jyothi Colony Residents Welfare Association told this newspaper, “There is a lot of garbage accumulated on the open land earmarked for the park. Many times, our residents complain of snakes in the area because of open garbage dumping. There is no fencing to prevent this.”

Residents also complain that the place serves as an open urinal to passers-by.

They are afraid of the rainy season when the situation worsens each year.

Mr N. Sarathchandran, a senior citizen who stays in Jyothi Colony said. “Because of this, there are a lot of mosquitoes. An unbearable stench comes for the garbage which forces to keep our doors closed.”

Another resident Mr Ch. Sai Baba, said, “If the park had been built, this situation would not have occurred. SCB needs to build fences for parks to protect the land. Residents can utilise the land for recreational purposes in the leisure times.”
