GHMC claims construction debris in choking water bodies
Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) claimed recently that they have achieved the target of desilting of the drains in the city and have removed 22,575 metric tonnes debris so far this year, construction and demolition debris can be found at every nook and corner of the city.
Residents have complained to the GHMC that several private persons have been illegally dumping the waste in by-lanes, lakes, storm water drains and other water bodies in the Greater Hyderabad limits.
Mustafabin Ahmed, a resident of Kamalanagar, Chaderghat, said dumping of huge quantity of construction waste has affected the free flow of River Musi. He said that several private contractors have been dumping the waste on the banks of the river.
“We have been complaining to the GHMC authorities since long. I have even uploaded the pictures on the MYGHMC App, but the corporation officials are yet to take any action,” said B Sumanth, a 34-year-old resident of the locality.
Environmental expert, BV Subba Rao said, “Dumping of construction debris in water bodies will have adverse impact on our health. The civic authorities have failed to set up a mechanism to process such material. We have the technology to recycle the debris, but we are not using it. We can at least lay roads by using construction debris.”
