KOLLAM: The uncertainties that loomed over MBBS admissions to the Parippally ESI Medical College have been finally cleared. The Medical Council of India has recommended to the Central ministry to revoke the ban on admissions to the college as the deficiencies pointed out by the MCI have been rectified. Dr Sara Varghese, principal, told this newspaper that they were awaiting the renewal of permission from the Central ministry to admit the 2018 MBBS batch to the college which currently functions as Government Medical College, Kollam, under the aegis of the state government.
“The report rectifying the defects has been submitted to the MCI by the director of medical education and the additional chief secretary and we expect the permission at the earliest,” she said. The medical college is ready to accommodate a new batch of 100 students. Thirty-five per cent seats are reserved for the children of ESI beneficiaries, 15 per cent for all-India quota and the remaining 50 per cent for state allotment. “We have all basic facilities and are ready to accommodate the new lot. There are no apprehensions on the admissions,” she added.
The MCI had earlier stalled the admissions for the next two academic years pointing out that the college had not complied with the norms laid down by the council. The Lodha panel appointed by the SC had given conditional sanction to admit 100 MBBS students in the college during 2017-18. Meanwhile, the UDF and LDF have claimed the credit for revoking the ban. “The parties are trying to politicise the issue though these are routine procedures. The credit for revoking the ban goes to the college administration, director of medical education and additional chief secretary,” the principal said.
