Telangana state may receive south-west monsoon by June 10

Weather officials say conditions are favourable.

Hyderabad: The weather bureau has forecast that by June 10, the south-west monsoon will cover all of Telangana state, going by its present progress.

The monsoon is expected to hit the Kerala coast two days earlier than usual, on May 30. With favourable conditions building up, it could move north from Kerala three or four days later and touch Rayalaseema. It could then arrive in Telangana by the end of the first week of June.

The monsoon usually arrived in Telangana on June 5, but this date has been pushed back over the years.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said conditions were favourable for the monsoon to cover the entire state before June 10.

“It must be borne in mind that the date of onset is highly variable. However, currently, the conditions are good and the monsoon will hit Kerala by near the normal date, around May 30, so Telangana is likely to witness an early onset compared to the last few years. Moreover, the date of the onset is not an indicator of how the rainy season will shape up,” said Y.K. Reddy, director, IMD Hyderabad.

The south-west monsoon is caused by winds carrying moisture from the Arabian Sea, and blowing from a south-westerly direction.

The monsoon will be active if low pressure areas form in the Bay of Bengal during the journey of the monsoon winds from southern India.
