MBBS based on Neet: Tamil Nadu officials
Chennai: As students and parents continue to wonder about the procedure by which those aspiring to pursue MBBS will be selected, officials from the Tamil Nadu Health Department state that as on date, the legal position is that the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Neet) is supreme.
Stating that it was a matter of confusion before her daughter gave the Neet on May 7 and continues to remain so, Surabhi P. said, “I hope the government could make it clear as many of us are still unsure of what steps to take. My daughter worked really hard, but still found the Common Entrance Test difficult. Though the Tamil Nadu government had passed a bill, it received strong objections.”
“Union Ministers did make it clear that the state will not be exempted from the test, however, the government continues to fight for the cause of its students,” said a source.
“There are many enterprising students in the state who may have worked extremely hard to prepare for the test. It may also be unfair to them if the test is suddenly considered by the state. There are a variety of issues that can arise,” the source added.
Stating that though the Supreme Court has ordered for the implementation of the test in all states, Directorate of Medical Education Dr. Edwin Joe said that the state government will not give up its fight. As per Supreme Court guidelines, counselling has to be conducted in the second week of July and the admissions process should be completed within August 31.
