Chennai: Special sub-inspector caught with 22 kg marijuana
Chennai: The City Police on Tuesday arrested a special sub-Inspector attached to the Fort police station after sleuths seized 22 kg of marijuana from his official residence in police quarters located in Royapuram.
The arrested cop has been identified as Sundaravadivel, attached to the law & order wing of Fort police station. The arrest was carried out by a team sent by deputy commissioner of Flower Bazaar after a local informer tipped off the police about interception of 22 kg ganja in an auto rickshaw by Sundaravadivel a couple days back which was not recorded by him.
Armed with information, the team conducted a search in his house located on West Madha Church street, which resulted in the seizure of contraband. Senior officials suspect that police SI, now arrested, was working closely with the ganja peddlers in Annai Sathya Nagar.
The SI, who was on night duty on Monday, intercepted a ganja peddler from Annai Sathya Nagar and took home 22 kg ganja from the peddler. He believed to have used his official vehicle to transport the ganja to his quarters for safekeeping, sources said.
The seizure was immediately known to many others in his station and later was informed to higher ups. "Most of the cops will have some informant locally. So it is impossible to hide such seizure because everybody will come to know about within hours if the seizure is local," police noted.
The SI, who thought it was his special catch, did not inform his superiors and also decided to not record it. It appears he was planning to sell the ganja to other peddlers to make quick money. Police are now trying to find out if he was regularly doing such illegal activities.
After an internal inquiry it was decided to arrest him for illegal possession of ganja. Three women who used to procure contraband from him were also arrested. "The arrested policeman will be placed under suspension soon," senior official added.
