Arts, science courses hold sway this year
Chennai: Demand for arts and science courses is soaring as evident in the significant increase in applications received by city colleges well ahead of the start of admission procedure.
As the market for engineering courses comes down, there is an increase in mainstream science courses at the under graduation level.
“We have received around 16,500 as on Wednesday. The number is more than the total applications received last year,” said Major Dr M. Venkatramanan, principal, Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss Vaishnav College (DDGDV), adding that the college is witnessing a parallel increase in B Com, BBA and off-stream courses.
The mental block about arts and science courses has also come down, thanks to the decline of interest for of engineering courses and increased awareness about off-stream courses.
“I want to pursue Radiology as I am very passionate about it. I applied for B.Sc Physics and B. Sc Chemistry at Loyola Arts & Science College, Chennai,” said D. Pasupathi, a student.
B.com and BBA are the most sought after courses, as students see them as a safe destination. The DDGDV College, has so far received a total of 16,500 applications out of which 4,000 were for B.Com, according to the principal.
At the same time, B.Com is among the preferred subjects in rural sections.
Dr S. Kaliraj, principal of Pachaiyappa’s College said his institution has allotted 180 seats for B.com course. He also added that most of the students applying for Pachaiyappa’s were rural students.
Apart from B.Com, colleges have received good number of applications for B.Sc Computer Science and BCA (Bachelor of Computer Application), say management staff from colleges.
