Metro extension from Byappanahalli may be delayed

Although construction work is scheduled by mid June this year, the preparatory work has been going on for a long time.

Bengaluru: As the final notification over land for metro phase 2 between Byappanahalli and Satya Sai Hospital has been released and the land committee had given its report of land between Byappanahalli and Madevpura, there seems to be a lot of anticipation among the people of Whitefield.

Although construction work is scheduled by mid June this year, the preparatory work has been going on for a long time. Despite this, BMRCL might not be able to meet the scheduled date. Compensation packages which were to be paid in January have not been cleared yet. It looks like the extension of Whitefield will start only by August, according to a BMRCL official.

Chinnappa, General Manager (Land) from BMRCL says, “Currently, KIADB is issuing notices to people who had to receive the compensation. BMRCL has already worked out the compensation amount. Once the compensation amount is released, we will start the land acquisition process and then finally hand it over to the engineers for construction.”

On the time required for this and by when work will start, he refrained from giving any specific deadline. About 200 acres of land are to be acquired for the entire phase 2. Between Byapanahalli to Whitefield 495 properties are to be acquired. Nayandanahalli to Kengeri is 59 properties, Hessarghatta to Bangalore International Exhibition Centre is 25 properties, and from Puttenahalli to Anjanapura Township are 281 properties.

The remaining two new lines are from RV Road to Bommasandra to Electronic City and Gottigere to Nagawara. Phase 2 will comprise of 61 Stations and will cover a distance of 72.10 km. It is planned to be completed at the cost of Rs.26405 crore and BMRCL is looking at getting a Rs11000 crore as loan from various agencies. Currently, BMRCL is in talks with various agencies and working out the terms and conditions.

Byappanahalli–ITPL–Whitefield extension line is to have 13 stations, while the 6.465 km Mysore Road Terminal-Kengeri extension line will have 5 stations. Similarly, the 3.77 km Hessarghatta Cross–BIEC extension line is to have 3, the 6.29 km Puttenahalli Cross–Anajanapura Township will have five. The 21.25 km Gottigere–IIMB–Nagavara new line will have 18, and the 18.82 km R.V. Road Terminal–Bommasandra new line will have 16 stations.

Ever since the proposal of metro extension in Whitefield has come up, people have been happy as well as worried as Whitefield is already dealing with a of lot of traffic chaos and metro construction might add to the mess.

However, BMRC has already tendered to widen the Mahadevapura Road up to 25 metres and take up nine metres in the middle of the road to construct the elevated structure. However, the good news is that work on Nayadanahalli to Kengeri has already started and metro is gearing up to float tenders for Puttenahalli-Anjanapura stretch.
