Chennai: Couple electrocuted after poll duty

53-year old woman clerk working with Southern Railway and her 65-year old-husband were electrocuted to death.

Chennai: In a bizarre accident, a 53-year old woman clerk working with Southern Railway and her 65-year old-husband were electrocuted to death when the latter took the former home after finishing election duty, in Mogappair West during the early hours of Tuesday.

Police said a snapped overhead cable, live and was submerged in rainwater puddle, is suspected to be the primary cause for the electrocution. G. Nalini, (53), a railway employee, and differently abled, was living with her husband Govindhan (65), an autorickshaw driver, and their married son, in Mogappair West.

Nalini was assigned to discharge poll duty in Tiruttani. After completing the required poll procedures, Nalini left with her husband in the intervening night of Mon-day and Tuesday from Tiruttani.

Around 2 am, the couple reached 1st Block in Mogappair West where they lived.
While they got down from the vehicle, the couple accidentally stepped on a live wire of a snapped over-head-cable and suffered electrocution.

“I was careful enough not to wade through stagnant water. I walked to the end of the street to call a driver. That was when I saw them enter the street, and suffer electrocution. Immediately, I alerted other neighbours, who later identified the couple,” Nagaraj, their neighbor, said.

The denizens of the block charged that the electricity board authorities turned a deaf ear towards the request to replace the overhead power cables with underground cables. The deceased couple is survived by son Ramesh (32) and daughter Saraswathy (29).
