World Bank aid for Vijayawada Municipal Corporation project
Vijayawada: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation would construct a project with the support of World Bank funds in the city to generate electricity from meth-ane which is being released from sewage treatment plants.
The WB would extend roughly Rs 6.5 crore as grant under Sustainable Cities Concept through the Global Environment Facility Fund. The project would be completed within six mon-ths with the global technology.
The project would be handed over to the VMC within the next five years. VMC commissioner G. Veerapandian explained that all the works related to this project would be executed and guided by the WB expert team.
Mr Veerapandian said that this decision was taken at a meeting recently held in Singapore with 11 countries on Global Platform for Sustainable Cities. He explained that to develop sustainable cities from across the globe, the GPSC selected 23 cities from these eleven countries.
Out of the 23 cities, five from India including Vijayawada, Guntur, Bhopal, Mysore and Jaipur were selected.
He said that the GPSC is extending the grant to develop the Indian cities under environmental conservation and climate change. He explained that the project cost would be shared by the WB and the VMC on 1:8 ratio.
