Nellore: CCTV cams to check traffic violations
Nellore: New superintendent of police Vishal Gunni is hopeful of ending the free run that traffic violators have had and the chaotic state of roads in Nellore, using modern technology to streamline the system.
Sources in the police department said that the SP was determined to bring discipline among road users after witnessing the utter disregard for traffic rules in the city. He expressed surprise when he found most motorcycle riders and car drivers talking on mobile phones while driving, a police official said.
As a first step, a scientific study is being carried out on the existing traffic system by a committee consisting of subject experts, town planners and engineers who will come up with solutions in realigning the large traffic islands and dividers.
Top on the SP's agenda is the installation of CCTVs and signals at all traffic junctions besides crowded areas for round-the-clock surveillance from a centralised control room.
Those manning the control room will alert the traffic police at the junctions to apprehend vehicle users jumping signals or committing other violations. The transport wing's data will be integrated with the server in the control room in the next phase to issue e-challans for traffic violations.
The SP advised citizens to update their vehicle records, including insurance and driving licences, hinting at surprise checks that could be conducted at various parts of the city soon.
Mr Vishal Gunni said that a committee, consisting of the district collector, SP, corporation commissioner, town DSP, traffic DSP and two people's representatives, was being formed to devise a long-term strategy to put an end to traffic snarls in the city.
An official said that they had already installed a CC camera at the Madras bus stand junction and were studying the traffic flow at the junction.
