Not segregating? BBMP to shame you
Bengaluru: Not segregating garbage? The BBMP is going to shame you into separating wet waste and the dry waste. Taking their campaign against curbing garbage black spots across the city and preventing people from discarding non-segregated waste to a new level, the Palike has started pasting stickers on the doors of houses that do not segregate garbage. BBMP officials said this will help identify households that pose a hurdle in segregating waste at source.
“Pourakarmikas are the soldiers of the city who help collect garbage door-to-door. They know who segregates garbage and who does not,” a BBMP official said. In many areas of the city, pourakarmikas who collect garbage have been given these stickers. They will paste stickers on houses that do not give segregated garbage, he said.
“One of the major reasons for black spots in the city is that people who miss giving the waste to garbage collection vehicles in the morning stuff the garbage in plastic bags and dump it at deserted locations near their areas. To address this, we have put up bins at such locations. Though we have put up separate bins for garbage disposal, people still dump mixed waste in them. This defeats the very purpose and makes segregation difficult,” the officer said.
“First, we ask pourakarmikas to paste the stickers. Later, we question the house occupants and pursue them to segregate waste. As a last resort, we will slap fines on them,” he said.
