Telangana: First varsity for women planned
Hyderabad: The state’s first women’s university is likely to come up in Mahbubnagar. It is likely to be named after Jogulamba Devi, the presiding deity in the Alampur temple in the district.
The proposal is under consideration of the government for some time, and may be cleared soon. Prof. Vimala of Telangana Women Collective, comprising women intellectuals, poets, writers and artists, stated that they had been pursuing the matter.
She said that locating the Padmavathi university in Tirupati which went to AP after bifurcation had resulted in women from coastal regions securing higher educational qualifications. Ms Vimala said they lobbied with key personalities including Planning Commission vice-chairman S. Niranjan Reddy, who responded positively.
Mr Niranjan Reddy, who also hails from Mahbubnagar district, said “if everything goes well, the Jogulamba Mahila University might begin operations from the next academic year.”
