Jr docs, house surgeons of Kakatiya Medical College hold protest

The college administration said that the hostel building which was allotted to house surgeons was made into a Covid isolation block

Hanamkonda: Members of the Telangana Junior Doctors Association (TJDA) and house surgeons of the Kakatiya Medical College (KMC) held a protest on Monday and demanded that they not be vacated from their hostels here on Monday.

The doctors alleged, that following an assurance by the KMC to provide a hostel inside the campus, the house surgeons of the batch of 2016 joined the internship programme and were working in the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Hospital from August 2021.

They alleged that the KMC administration was forcing the house surgeons to vacate the hostel now, and was telling them to stay in tiny rooms which are unhygienic and poorly ventilated.

The college administration said that the hostel building which was allotted to house surgeons was made into a Covid isolation block. Water and power supply to the building was cut on Monday, though some house surgeons are in isolation there.

“We are 83 members. The building the college has allotted, REH Hostel, has 16 rooms which are very tiny, unhygienic and can accommodate only 45 to 50 members. How are we supposed to adjust in those tiny rooms in the midst of our hectic duties,” the doctors asked.

Even if they attempt to take houses on rent, the houseowners are reluctant to accommodate them due to the pandemic situation, they added.

The issue was taken to district collector Rajiv Gandhi Hanmantu, who asked them to settle the issue by having discussions with the administration, the doctors said. “The college management is not in a mood to heed our requests,” a doctor alleged.

“Four months are left for our internship. We would like to stay in the REH Hostel building. There is no alternate housing facility for female house surgeons,” they said. If their request to stay in the same hostel building is not heeded, they will boycott duties, the doctors said.
