Thrissur: Private hospital to treat tribal head for free

Thrissur MCH failed to diagnose illness properly when he was admitted.

THRISSUR: The tribal head of Anakkayam settlement at Peringalkuthu near Chalakkudy, who has been ailing for the last six months, will be given free treatment at a private hospital.

Raman Moopen, 70, suffering from bleeding and issues related to his motion, was treated in Thrissur MCH in December and January for several days and discharged. But his ailment was not diagnosed properly, the people close to him said.

“He was treated for blood clotting in his head, but the bleeding continued and his condition was worsening when I saw him in his settlement. He was not even able to speak properly,” Mr K.A. Niyabudheen, managing trustee of Winborne Public Trust (WPT) in Thrissur, which works for the betterment of tribal hamlets, said.

The members of the trust took the moopen to Daya Hospital where he underwent endoscopy and CT scan on Thursday.

“We are almost sure that he suffers from rectal cancer and his rectum will have to be removed. We are awaiting the biopsy test results on Friday. Two surgeons along with an oncologist will conduct the laparoscopic surgery of the moopen soon,” Dr V.K. Abdul Aziz, hospital MD, said.

The surgery that cost Rs 1.5 lakh will be done free of cost and the room rent will be waived. Also, 90 percent of the medicines would be provided cashless,” he added.

WPT Trust member P.S. Sivakumar said that though the government was spending several crores of rupees on tribal welfare schemes, the community was not getting proper medical attention. The sister of Raman moopen had died of cancer— by spitting blood-- which was not properly diagnosed, say the trust members.
