Thiruvananthapuram: Status quo over BTech eligibility
Thiruvananthapuram: The Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE) has not yet finalised its decision on the suggestion to dilute the eligibility criteria for management quota seats in self-financing engineering colleges.
There was a demand from the managements of self-financing engineering to amend the admission criteria to management quota se-ats for the BTech course.
The demand arose because more than 50 per cent of the seats were vacant for BTech in self-financing engineering colleges in the state last year.
As per the present criteria, candidates must have passed Higher Secondary Examination, Kerala or equivalent examinationwith 50 per cent marks in Mathematics separately and 50 per cent marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry put together.
To take admission under management quota in private Self- Financing Engineering Colleges or Government Controlled Self Financing Engineering Colleges candidates must have 45 per cent marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry put together.
Higher education minister K.T. Jaleel said that the government had not taken a final decision on doing away with the provision of minimum marks for admissions to management seats in self-financing colleges. There were two arguments on the issue. Some felt that this would help in filling the seats as more than 50 per cent seats were lying vacant.
The other argument was that it would reduce quality.
The prospectus committee for engineering entrance has not finalised the prospectus. The decision regarding the same will be included in the prospectus, said Mr Jaleel.
