Kozhikode: SAVE set to quench thirst of birds during summer

The project envisages keeping a vessel at each of the households of 1.5 lakh students and 8,000 teachers.

KOZHIKODE: The Students Army for Vivid Environment (SAVE) programme of Kozhikode district has geared up for a mission to set up lakhs of water filled vessels to quench the thirst of birds in the summer. This is the sixth continuous year SAVE is doing this, using all the students and teachers of the district.

The project envisages keeping a vessel at each of the households of 1.5 lakh students and 8,000 teachers. The concept is derived from the green lesson that every form of life has the right to live on mother earth and nature’s resources are to be shared. “The vessel should be kept either by hanging or perched on trees at households or at school premises. The vessel would be filled once in a day,” said Vadayakkandy Narayanan, the SAVE district coordinator.

SAVE has introduced the project in 2014 and it had got overwhelming response. “This time each school was asked to submit a report to ensure successful implementation,” added SAVE coordinator. A teacher at Government boys HSS, Koyilandy told that the water in the vessel was drunk by birds and some even took a quick bath. The project is one among a slew of green initiatives of SAVE, which was formed in 2013. Plastic waste management plan, rain walk, rejuvenating abandoned water sources are a few of the projects being undertaken by the green organisation.

Transport minister A.K Saseendran will inaugurate the function of the year at Parappil M.M School on January 18 at 3 pm.
