MLA seats in Andhra Pradesh may go up

A senior TRS leader involved said the Centre would introduce the Bill on the first day of the Budget Session.

Hyderabad: The ruling parties in the Telugu states appeared very confident about delimitation of Assembly constituencies before the next elections.

After the meetings that AP Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana state Chief Minister K. Chandrase-khar Rao had with Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently, the TD in AP and the TRS in TS expect the Centre to introduce the delimitation Bill in the next Parliament session.

A senior TRS leader involved said the Centre would introduce the Bill on the first day of the Budget Session.

Sources said Mr Modi had directed the Union home department to take steps to introduce the Bill in the coming session. The home ministry had prepared the draft and was awaiting his nod.

Currently, TS has 119 constituencies and AP 175. After delimitation, the number would go up to 153 in Telangana state and 225 in Andhra Prade-sh. TRS leaders said that after passing the Bill, the Centre would appoint a delimitation committee and the process would be completed within two months.

If delimitation was completed before the next Assembly elections, it will give a big relief to the TRS in Telangana and the TD in Andhra Pradesh.

In AP several YSRC legislators have joined the Telugu Desam.

In the present situation the two parties are facing a big problem in accommodating sitting MLAs, aspirants and the defectors. The delimitation would give them additional seats for distribution which would help in accommodating several leaders.
