GHMC's garbage autos being wasted

GHMC Uppal circle's deputy commissioner K.J. Vijay Krishna said that the civic body took initiation in designing the e-rickshaws.

Hyderabad: Officials of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation are long on talks but, short in deeds. Despite having eco-friendly auto-rickshaws to lift garbage at their disposal the civic body is continuing to use carbon monoxide-emitting autos to pick up the trash. Residents from a colony have even donated two eco-friendly e-autos, costing Rs 1 lakh each to GHMC’s Uppal circle office for lifting garbage.

GHMC Uppal circle’s deputy commissioner K.J. Vijay Krishna said that the civic body took initiation in designing the e-rickshaws. “Our aim is to replace rickshaws with e-rickshaws as there will no need of driving license for the pilots,” he said.

He said that the delay from the transport department in registering the e-auto-rickshaws, they could not utilise it. “Some municipalities in Goa and Gujarat are using e-rickshaws. We are waiting for the response from the transport department. These auto-rickshaws do not emit carbon monoxide and nitrogen. We plan to procure more if the transport department issues permissions,” he said. Transport Commissioner T. Raghunath said that the government has already issued an order on the approvals for e-rickshaws.

GHMC seeks marks from city
The GHMC is quite eager to secure a higher rank in the Swachh Survekshan Survey of 2017, conducted across 500 cities. The survey is based on 2,000 marks and 450 of those marks come in through citizen feedback through a phone call or votes on swachh-survekshan.in. Which is the GHMC is seeking the active participation from Hyderabad.

GHMC Commissioner Dr B. Janardhan Reddy said: “The Government of India is conducting the Swachh Survekshan Survey of 2017, to rank 500 cities of India on cleanliness. We expect Hyderabadis to help the GHMC in achieving a higher rank.” The GHMC’s list of achievements includes the removal of 1,116 open garbage points, over 44 lakh rubbish bins given to 21 lakh homes and the 3,300 toilets given to toiletless homes.
