Alanganallur looks like an undeclared war zone: MK Stalin
Chennai: As protests in favour of jallikattu spread across Tamil Nadu, leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin on Tuesday expressed solidarity with protesting students at Marina beach by visiting them and asked the police to ensure that those arrested in Alanganallur be released.
He also alleged that the police were treating Alanganallur as an “undeclared war zone” and steps should be taken to ensure that jallikattu is held within the Tamil month of Thai that ends in mid-February.
“The state government is trying to quell the peaceful protests in favour of jallikattu by arresting the protesters and refusing them food and water. The DMK has been supporting peaceful protests across the state,” Stalin said.
“No force would stand in the way of students’ voice and this has been amplified through the protests. The protests reminisces the 1965 anti-Hindi agitation,” he added.
Stalin met students from Loyola College, New College and Presidency College on Tuesday protesting in Marina Beach. A few college students asked Mr Stalin to leave the protest site since they don’t want to politicse the protest. However, the DMK leader addressed the protesters for a few minutes.
