Pro-Kannada outfits have their way; no 'Sunny Nights'

City police commissioner, T Suneel Kumar confirmed on Saturday that the event would not be allowed.

Bengaluru: Putting a dampner on New Year eve celebrations in the city, the police has said a firm no to Bollywood actress, Sunny Leone’s ‘Sunny Nights’ planned by an advertising firm ‘Time Creations’ at a hotel in Nagavara to bring in 2018. Giving in to pressure from pro-Kannada outfits, the police has denied permission for the event for “security reasons.” Since the event was announced, a series of protests have been held by pro-Kannada outfits in the city, including one in front of the Manyata Tech park, where the demonstrators, wearing black ribbons and armed with brooms, burnt posters of the actress, claiming her performance could “spoil Kannada culture.”

City police commissioner, T Suneel Kumar confirmed on Saturday that the event would not be allowed. “We cannot give permission to the event as we fear there could be a law and order situation and we cannot afford to provide it security when our forces are deployed across the city on the night of December 31,” the commissioner explained. Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy said on Friday that Sunny Nights would not be permitted in the city as Leone’s fans in Kochi went berserk during her visit in August this year.

Harish M S, Managing Director of ‘Time Creations’, told Deccan Chronicle that the people had misunderstood the event. “It’s a cultural event just like any other. I will meet the Home Minister and explain to him what we plan to do. If he is convinced, we will go ahead,” he said, adding that as he had not received anything in writing as yet from the police denying permission for Sunny Nights, tickets for the event would continue to be available on BookMyShow.
