Bengaluru: 1971 war heroes remembered

Veterans of the three services and the serving officers of the Indian Air Force placed a floral wreath at the memorial.

Bengaluru: On the 47th anniversary of India’s victory against Pakistan in the 1971 war, floral tributes were paid to the martyrs at the National Military Memorial on Friday. Veterans of the three services and the serving officers of the Indian Air Force placed a floral wreath at the memorial.

Ms Salma Shafeeq, wife of late Maj Shafeeq Mohammad Khan Ghori who laid down his life in Operation Rakshak, was invited along with the mother of late Maj Sylvester Rajesh who was martyred in 2002 in Keran Sector during Operation Parkram, to pay floral tributes to the fallen heroes of 1971 war. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who is on a tour of north Karnataka, gave the event a miss. The guest of honour, Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy however, was present. On December 16, 1971, Pakistan surrendered with more than 93,000 of its men, which led to the creation of Bangladesh.
