Nellore hospital feeds patients rotten vegetables

Dr. Venkataramana said they will initiate action against the food contractor if conditions do not improve.

NELLORE: A surprise check of the kitchen in the Government General Hospital by Nellore Municipal Corporation officials revealed spoilt vegetables and insects in the rice being supplied to patients.

The civic body’s health officer Dr. Venkataramana felt food being supplied by the diet kitchen of the general hospital was far worse than in roadside eateries.

“The cooks are using rotten vegetables, though after separating the damaged portion. We found insects in maida and wheat flour and rat excreta in rice,” the health officer stated after the hospital's kitchen was inspected a team of the corporation’s health wing.

Dr. Venkataramana said they will initiate action against the food contractor if conditions do not improve. He, however, said the condition of kitchens in the government medical college and nursing college were better, though he regretted that one of the kitchens was located next to toilets.

He said the health wing also found shortcomings, such as spoilt coconuts being used in the kitchen run by Saibaba Trust, which provides food to attendants of patients.

Medical college principal, Dr. A. Srihari, was also present with the health officer during the inspection.
