Chennai: Following the devastation caused by cyclone Gaja, the directorate of school education has sought a report from chief educational officers on the damage caused to schools by the cyclonic winds. The delta districts are Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, and Thiruvarur districts and Pudukottai were worst affected in the cyclone.

“The heavy rain caused damages to school compounds and buildings and fallen trees, severed overhead cables are found on the school campus,” one of the headmasters in Thiruvarur district said. In Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts, many schools are being used as relief camps as well.

“We are unable to move out of the houses due to heavy rain and roadblock. Once the situation improves, we will go out and ascertain the damage,” one of the district educational officers in Pudukottai district said.

“We will start restoration work once we receive the reports from the respective CEOs. If students lost their books in the cyclone and heavy rain, the department will supply them new books,” school education officials said.
