Chennai: Over 60% of the class 7 students studying in CBSE schools have failed in mensuration and comparing quantities test in maths subject, a pilot study conducted by HeyMath, an education technology company has found.

Around 5,000 students from classes 5 to 9 in 30 CBSE schools from cities including Chennai, Delhi, Madurai, Coimbatore and Vellore took part in the Maths proficiency test conducted by HeyMath

“Around 35 per cent of class 5 students failed in factors, multiples and divisibility tests which will directly affect their understanding of lowest common multiple and highest common factor. Forty per cent of class 6 students failed in decimals, fractions and ratios,” HeyMath said.

Students have to answer a minimum of 40 per cent questions correctly to clear the test.

Speaking about the study, Nirmala Sankaran, co-founder of HeyMath said, “Transitions to class 5 to 6 and 8 to 9 are very important and a strong arithmetic foundation is critical. CBSE has made board exams mandatory for class 10 and considering to test the students at classes 5 and 8 as well. The students are far from ready.”

“The fear and aversion to Maths often begin when algebra is introduced and this almost always stems from a poor conceptual foundation in the primary years,” she said.

The pilot study was conducted to understand the learning gaps and recommend customized learning paths for every student using proven content and teaching methodology.

After evaluating the students’ levels through tests, the students were put through apersonalized learning programme to improve their performance.

“At the end of eight weeks, we found on average a minimum improvement among all students,” she added.
