Hyderabad: The micro earthquake recorded at Durgam Cheruvu was of greater magnitude than those recorded in Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills. However, except for the employees of JP Morgan, not many people felt the tremors.
According to the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), the tremors were not strong enough to be felt. No tremors were recorded on Thursday.
Ultra micro earthquakes of 0.3 to 0.5 magnitude were recorded in parts of Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills and Road No. 45 on Wednesday morning. However, they did not cause any damage to property. Areas around Durgam Cheruvu had experienced tremors on Tuesday.
Dr Srinagesh Davuluri, the head of Seismology Observatory at the NGRI, told this newspaper, “There was a one-on-one earthquake recorded at Durgam Cheruvu, Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills. There were no aftershocks recorded on Wednesday or Thursday; two seismographic stations showed that there were zero tremors. The magnitude of the earthquake was 0.6 on the Richter’s Scale as recorded close to KBR Park, and 1.1 on the Richter’s Scale as recorded at Durgam Cheruvu, however, both were micro in nature. Seismic activity is likely to continue until December, but citizens need not worry as the foundations of buildings can withstand such low magnitude tremors.”
Seismic activity in and around the city has been heightened in the recent past. A whopping 120 micro-earthquakes were recorded in Borabanda within the span of a single week at the end of October.
