No power to stop Padmavati: Karnataka Home Minister

But the state government had no powers to stop screening of the movie as it had been cleared by the Censor Board

Belagavi: Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy said the state government did not have the power to stop the screening of the Hindi movie 'Padmavati,' scheduled to hit the silver screen on November 30 since that right lies with the Censor Board.

Replying to Mr Lehar Singh (BJP) in the State Legislative Council on Thursday, the minister sought to clarify that he had not seen the movie yet to decide whether the movie director had reportedly distorted history.

The government was aware of strong opposition from the Rajput community which is against the release of the movie contending that it had hurt their feelings.

But the state government had no powers to stop screening of the movie as it had been cleared by the Censor Board. However, adequate security arrangements would be made across the state to prevent any untoward incident when the film is screened, he added.

Earlier, Mr Lehar Singh brought to the notice of the state government the strong opposition from the Rajput community against the movie on the ground that it had distorted history.
