Chennai: Karunas' associates assault businessman
Chennai: CCTV footage of a brawl involving associates of MLA Karunas and a businessman at a popular pub in MRC Nagar has emerged.
Police have arrested one person, a key office bearer of actor Karunas' party and have launched hunt for two advocates for assaulting the businessman, R Bharaneeswaran of Anna Nagar.
The incident happened last Saturday night, according to Bharaneeswaran, who filed a complaint with the police on Sunday. Recalling the sequence of events, the businessman said that he exchanged pleasantries with Karunas as they knew each other well. An office bearer of the actor turned legislator's party - Mukkulathor Puli Padai was with Karunas along with a few of his friends.
“Ajay Vandayar who was with Karunas was known to me and since we were not on very good terms, I acknowledged his presence and moved on”, Bharaneeswaran said. A few minutes later, Ajay and five others including two advocates went to the businessman and picked up a fight.
Damodharan, an advocate, introduced himself as cousin of Ajay and demanded respect from the businessman. The businessman retorted and within a few seconds, a bottle was flung at him. The businessman was pushed to the floor and thrashed by the group as MLA Karunas left the scene.
According to Bharaneeswaran, the MLA contacted him that night and told him that he was in the dark as to how to react then. CCTV footage also showed music director Anirudh Ravichander who was part of the crowd that night leaving the pub as violence broke out.
Bharaneeswaran was subsequently treated at a hospital. Foreshore Estate Police booked Ajay, Damodharan and four others under various sections of the IPC. While Ajay has been arrested, police are yet to arrest the advocate brothers.
“They seem to be well connected. I hope the police arrest others involved in the attack too,” Bharaneeswaran said.
