CZM plan poses more questions than answers
Visakhapatnam: The Coastal Zone Management Plan draft for Vizag district left the public puzzled as most of the participants do not understand it in the absence of proper maps and explanation from the authority concerned.
A public hearing was conducted at VUDA Children’s Arena here in Vizag city on Tuesday for finalisation of Vizag coastal zone management plan under the chairmanship of district collector and magistrate Pravin Kumar to elicit public opinion and suggestions.
CPM Leader K. Loknadham and fisherfolk in Vizag region highlighted the open violation of the CRZ rules in Vizag City and rural areas and pollution taking place along the Vizag shore.
They alleged that the district administration has turned a blind eye to CRZ violators due to political influence.
Representatives from the fisher-folk community, who are directly affected by the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules, and some political outfits, protested the draft saying that most of the people residing in coastal villages were not consulted.
As per annexure-1 of CRZ Notification, 2011, which lists the guidelines and preparation of CZMPs, hazard mapping should clearly demarcate the land use plan of the area and existing authorised developments on the seaward side.
The map, however, looked very complicated owing to lack of proper graphics and narration.
Mr Pravin Kumar later explained to the media the purpose of the public meeting asking suggestions and objections on the coastal management plan for the district.
As the CPM members took a dig at the officials for not involving people of the coastal villages who are mostly affected by CRZ rules, he said another public meeting will take place if needed.
